What is Zumba?

Zumba has become a very popular fitness program. It is inspired by Latin dances. The word “Zumba” comes from a Colombian word meaning to move fast and have fun. These exercise routines use upbeat Latin music along with cardiovascular moves. This can be seen as aerobic dancing that is easy and fun to learn.

Good for Weight Loss?

Zumba is a great fitness program. It combines cardio intervals with resistance training. Experts think that an interval/resistance combination maximizes caloric output, fat burning and total body toning. Zumba incorporates body sculpting movements with easy to follow dance steps. Many people find the dance/exercise so much fun that they forget they are exercising. This allows them to working longer and burn more calories.

Typical Zumba Class

Most classes last about an hour. During the class you will dance many different dance styles including cumbia, merengue, salsa, reggae, mambo, rumba, flamenco and calypso. The music that should be playing is Latin music, which includes both fast and slow rhythms. This allows for a great cardio workout and body sculpting moves. Many instructors like to incorporate their own style. Some add a bit of belly dancing or hip hop moves.

Zumba is a very high energy exercise. If you like dancing to motivating music and try new moves and combinations, then it is for you. There are many new instructors and classes coming out into the market. There is bound to be a class in your area. Most times a single class will cost about $10 to $15. There are also many DVDs coming out so you can learn to dance at home. This maybe better if you think you may not be able to keep up with the high energy pase of the class. Invite some friends over and have some fun while learning to dance and exercise.
